Supernatural Season 10 started out as many seasons before, one of the brothers was trying to save the other from some sort of damnation. This time it was Sam saving Dean from the mark of Cain. Yes you read that right Cain of the Cain and Abel story of the bible. Which really led us to believe, before the renewal that is that this would be the final season with Dean finally doing what he was supposed to in season 5 and kill Sam. This however was not the case, and as I write this I would have hoped it had been, because again each season starts out with them saving each other.
Dean started this season out as Crowley’s right hand man, they were traveling around taking people out and feeding Dean’s need to kill. Sam was taken hostage by the son of a monster that Dean had killed years ago. Dean was ready to let Sam die, but somehow Sam got away and they both found Dean. Dean didn’t take too lightly to being found and took out his frustration on Cole (the guy who kidnapped Sam). Cole understood Dean was a monster and wanted to take him out. Of course Dean was a demon and Sam’s intention was to take him back to the bunker and cure him (which he would eventually do). Sam trapped Dean and took him home, and cured him and brought his Dean back although he would still be plagued by the mark of Cain.
As we go on through the season, Dean is having issues dealing with the mark he thinks he can control it but he really can’t. It’s not meant to be controlled its mean to be unleashed and needs to be fed but Dean is really a hero deep down and only kills when absolutely needed. This isn’t something we are afraid of we know Dean has killed to get the job done, but the way these kills had taken place most of them weren’t needed he was being driven by blind rage, which is a side of the character I had been wanting to see, because you know after years of being in the family business it has to be taking its toll on his mentality.
Castiel had a mission of helping Sam, behind Dean’s back in obtaining a cure for the mark of Cain. He was also being troubled with how he had ruined Jimmy Novak’s life (the guy who is Castiel’s vessel). Castiel is reunited with Jimmy’s daughter Claire who blames him for losing both of her parents. She had been on a search for her mother who had abandoned her to search for Castiel to find her husband. Finally Castiel does reunite Claire and Amelia together ending that story arc which helps Castiel feel some redemption for everything he had done. Even though I think he has done an amazing job being the go to guy to help Sam and Dean for the last 6 seasons.
Sam of course isn’t resting, he is working cases, being kidnapped and trying to save Dean as always. He wants the mark of Cain gone, and turns to Crowley’s mother of all people to save his brother. Rowena a witch who’s nearly 400 years old helps Sam find a codex to read the book of the damned (which Dean thought same had burned up) she was the only one who could read the book and do the spell. This was a good route up until we find out more information in the season finale which is probably the reason why Sam should really leave things alone and listen to Dean more.
Crowley figures out that he is the king of hell, and lets Sam know that when he makes an attempt on his life. Charlie unfortunately didn’t make it through the season, and she will be missed. She was taken out by the Stein family, or as they are revealed to be, the Frankensteins. They even used the Mary Shelley story as being true which was pretty cool in my book. Before you even ask or comment the family used body parts to enhance their speed, and strength as well as immortality. They weren’t all green and wondering around mumbling or being chased by villagers with pitchforks.
On to the Season 10 finale! Dean has went rogue and is of course mad at Sam because he went behind his back to remove the mark of Cain. It seems as though Sam doesn’t really trust his big brother when he says that he has a handle on it. It could be a good thing because I believe Dean was losing his tough with reality. I mean the last we had seen him was at the end of the previous episode before the finale, bashing Castiel to a bloody mess on the bunker floor making the decision to kill him with an angel blade.
We pick up with Dean investigating the death of a younger girl, by what he believes to be vampires and he is working with Rudy a hunter from the past. We could tell Dean was different, by the way he spoke and nearly blown his cover with it. He even took several punches to the face from a concerned father who was apparently beating and abusing his family, and didn’t even flinch just pulled a gun. He did find the other girl and she was alive, Rudy had found her to but had been taken as a hostage as well. Dean let Rudy die, he didn’t want to make a deal he killed the vamp and saved the girl and was gone. He went back to the motel he was staying at and started to have a break down. He was seeing all the people he had hurt, or killed in the mirror. He started breaking the room up and just admitted that he couldn’t handle it anymore.
Sam showed up at the cabin where the vamp had been, the officer showed him everything and explained what had happened. Sam knew Dean was in trouble after all of that and went looking for him. He found the motel, broke the door down and found the room a mess, and a note on the bed giving Sam the 67 model Impala.
By this time we know Dean had went to a small restaurant in the middle of nowhere to summon someone. That someone was Death. Sam of course got the address from Dean and came there. Dean’s exact words were that Sam needed to die. This was it the moment we had been waiting for. Dean vs. Sam, Cain and Abel, Lucifer and Michael. The fight we had been waiting for we we’re getting ready to see it, but we didn’t which kind of upset me but I guess I can deal with it.
Dean and Sam had an emotional scene, and Dean looked as though he was really going to through with asking Sam to shut his eyes so he didn’t have to see his brother be a monster. Dean took the scythe of Death he pulled it up and in one swift motion swung and completely missed Sam but hit Death with it. Death crumbles into dust and the Scythe is gone and Sam is still alive.
Sam opens his eyes in shock that Dean had just killed Death or so it seems. The thing is though the mark of Cain was still on Dean’s arm, but not for much longer. Rowena had started the spell, the only thing she had lacked at this point was the blood of something or someone she loved. Which was a polish boy named Oscar, not her son Crowley which wasn’t a real shocker, but she would kill him and start the spell. As the spell finished Crowley, Castiel and Rowena we’re all knocked down and this sent what look like a bolt of energy to find the mark and erase it off of Dean’s arm. Dean was hit with the bolt in the same area he had just killed Death. The mark was gone and Dean was free, but at what cost?
Dean knew that this was bad, and Sam knew that this was bad because of what Death had said. He had let Dean know that the mark of Cain was the first curse, a lock that kept the darkness out if you would. The darkness I assume is the first evil or the oldest evil that God and the archangels battled to start the creation of the universe. If you remember from a few seasons back Death told Sam and Dean that he was before God and would be the one who reaped God so I think that he wanted this. Hopefully we find that out in the next season. Sam and Dean leave the bar and shortly after notice the chaos in the sky, which was a big ball of lightning and it started striking the ground and the darkness was breaking through.
Rowena was free and back in power, she used magic on Castiel to make him into one of her zombies as I call it, and he was attacking Crowley. Hopefully Crowley can keep from getting killed and keep from killing Castiel. All we know about that is that Castiel was attacking Crowley.
Sam and Dean were running away from the darkness as the show ended. It looks as though Sam and Dean has caused another catastrophe that could end with the world being in danger again. We also may be nearing a new appearance of Chuck, and I really hope he brings Bobby back that would be great to have the family back to fight the darkness. I hope with the start of next season we see Lucifer getting released from his cage along with Michael. I still want that fight that we have waited on for 5 seasons. I am so looking forward to season 11 just as I have the previous 10 and I am also hoping the show provides some answers early on.
My rating for Supernatural season 10 is a 7/10
-Sam and Dean or Jensen and Jared are great together this is what keeps the show going.
-Crowley and Castiel provide some comical relief when needed, but also can be just as great on screen as Sam and Dean.
-The show teaches you that as a family, you can overcome anything and to always keep fighting.
-The only thing is that the show needs something new, and needs to pick up the pace a little bit there was a few episodes that I could have done without this season but I understand story line fillers and all that.
Again though the season 10 finale was great, and I’m looking forward to what the show has to offer during Season 11.
