Ant-Man 2015
Ant-Man 2015 released on July 16, 2015. It is the last film in the Phase 2 of the Marvel Studios cinematic universe. The movie stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang AKA Ant-Man, along with Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne.
The movie starts out showing us Hank Pym going to talk to Howard Stark and Peggy Carter discussing the Pym Particle. They wanted it to distribute as a weapon with shield, however Pym denied them the particle and said no one was getting it. This was in 1989 so it was shortly after Pym had went into retirement as the Ant-Man.
After this scene we cut to seeing Scott Lang, which would be in present day, he is currently in prison for theft. We first meet the character as he is having a knockout contest with an inmate because it was the day of his release. Lang gets released and goes with a friend Luis (Michael Pena) who is also a thief and had recent gotten out of prison. Luis explained that everyone had left him, and he was living with a group of people who were still in the game. Of course Scott Lang having a daughter wanted to go straight and get a job and try to provide for his family. Lang ends up finding a job at Baskin Robins, which doesn’t last him very long due to him being a felon.
We’re introduced to and older Hank Pym as he is going to watch a presentation given by Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) this was a presentation about the Pym Particle in which we get to see the glory days of Pym as the Ant-Man on video. Cross had been a protégé of Pym who had become obsessive with Pym’s work on the Pym Particle.
After the presentation we figure out that Scott Lang and company have a plan to break into Pym’s house to get into a safe in the basement. What they didn’t know is that the Ant-Man suit was in the safe and that Pym was letting them break into his home. This I thought was a great way of getting the suit into Scott Lang’s hands and seeing if he was capable of working with it as he should be.
Scott Lang stole the suit and went back to his apartment, he then tried the suit on and used the shrinking powers while standing in the bathtub. Our first view of the miniature world, from Ant-Man’s perspective was great watching him run across the large terrain of the tub and then onto the bathroom floor was amazing.
After using the suit the first time, Scott decided it was too much on him and went back to Pym’s house to return the suit. By this time the cops had been called and Lang was caught. Which was really all a setup to get him with Pym at this point. He needed to convince Lang that he needed to be Ant-Man and this was really the only way he could get near him to do so. While in the jail after his talk with Pym Lang decided that he would take his second chance and be Ant-Man. He escaped and woke up and at Pym’s home.
Hope (Pym’s Daughter) who was helping Pym get close to Cross, who was trying to develop the Pym Particle all on his own was watching Lang because she didn’t trust him. She wanted to use the suit because she felt it was her birth right to do so. Hank Pym denied her however mostly because of what had happened to her mother Wasp. Who we find out joined in Ant-Man’s adventures and in 1987 had used the shrinking device on her suit to go subatomic and would just continue to shrink into the quantum realm for all eternity. Janet, Hanks wife was lost and that’s when Hank Pym retired and decided to keep the Pym Particle to himself.
The two of them go on to train Lang on how to use the Ant-Man suit so that he would be ready to break into the Pym Tech and get the YellowJacket suit before it was used. One of his missions would cause a run in with The Falcon. He was sent to the Avengers Head Quarters in New York thinking it was one of Howard Stark’s storage facilities. The Flacon tried to stop Ant-Man but he had quite a fight on his hands and Ant-Man was successful in getting the piece he was sent after.
After all the preparing and training Lang was ready to go ahead with the mission. He enlisted the help of his friends Luis and Kurt, and Dave to help with the heist. Before Pym sent them, he gave Scott some discs which would make things grow and shrink it was a way for the suit to have a defense line.
The plan goes off without any problems until the moment when Ant-Man was trying to get to the YellowJacket suit. He was caught by Cross and stuck, Cross had finally gotten his hands on the Pym Particle. Cross knew that he was being double crossed by Hope and Dr. Pym. So he shot Hank Pym before Ant-Man could escape the trap he was in. Lang finally escaped made sure that Dr. Pym was alright and went after Cross who was already escaping with the YellowJacket suit. By the time Ant-Man got to the helicopter Cross had already put the YellowJacket suit on and the fight started.
The fight lasted for a while in a few locations and we got to see what the YellowJacket suit could do, which was pretty cool. They fought inside of a brief case, and even on a train set which compared to their size was huge. As they fought Ant-Man realized that he could stop the YellowJacket but he would have to go subatomic and shrink into the quantum realm which he possibly may never come back from. Lang started to shrink down and went inside of the YellowJacket suit to destroy it, which he did and in turned killed Cross. The next few moments we watched Lang go through the quantum realm and it seemed like he traveled for an eternity while he could still hear his daughter’s voice off in the distance. The disks that he was given would save him from the quantum realm, he used one that would make him grow, placed it into the belt and was able to grow back to normal size out of the quantum realm.
Scott Lang had went full circle from being a thief and a loser who couldn’t provide for his daughter to being a hero that would be joining the Avengers. This movie portrayed the Scott Lang origin great, and gave us a glimpse at the origin of Hank Pym as Ant-Man. Overall the fight scenes were some of the best yet with growing from miniature to normal human size during the fights. Made the scenes seem less boring and could keep your interests. The one thing that this movie did give us was some easter eggs for whats to come in the phase 3 part of the cinematic universe. Which I won’t name in case you haven’t seen the film.
This film seemed to be more for a wider audience and not really limited to kids there was some language in the film that really hadn’t been in the Avengers movies or really any of the other Marvel Cinematic movies during the phase 1 and 2 series. So I hope with this movie we can expect to see a darker universe starting with Captain America 3: Civil War. It would be expected considering they are going up against Thanos.
I give this movie a 10/10
*It kept me laughing and interested.
*Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas working together was amazing and couldn’t have been any one better on screen.
*The Ant-Man footage from the Pym Adventures really gave you a glimpse at the past of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Shield.
I hope that Marvel/Disney keeps putting movies out like this one, to me it’s been the best since Guardians of the Galaxy and really rivals that movie as being the best that the MCU has to offer.
