Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander as the man character Lara Croft released March 16 2018! The movie is a complete and total reboot from the dismal Angelina Jolie films. The source material is a game by the same name Tomb Raider, which has been a game franchise now more than 2 decades. This certain movie however was adapted from the reboot released in 2013.
The movie starts out introducing us to Lara and her father Richard who is a tomb raider or treasure hunter. He is leaving what appears to be a young Lara between the ages of 8 and 10, to go on an expedition.
We skip ahead a few years Lara of course is some where between her late teens to early 20s and she cannot accept the fact that her father is gone. She doesn’t want to sign paperwork to take over the family’s fortune and she isn’t about to declare him “legally” dead. So she’s doing what most young people do, rebelling and working for what little money they can and just mainly trying to stay out of trouble, but as it goes trouble does find her. She gets involved in a game and is being chased through London, crashes over a police car on her bike and is taken into custody. Her guardian comes to get her and talks her into signing the papers to take control of what her dad left behind.
Lara goes the next day to do just that, except when she does she finally figures out why her dad has to be gone so many times throughout her child hood. She also finds out what really happened to him 7 years ago. Which of course is what sets her in motion to go and find him, leading her down the same path her dad has chosen. She runs out right before she could sign the papers because she just has to have proof her dad is for sure dead.
Lara sets out and it’s going to the island that her dad disappeared on. She of course doesn’t know what to expect, and the boat she is on is shipwrecked and she wakes up under the care of a strange man that she doesn’t know. His name is Mathis Vogel, and he’s there for the same reason as her. They’re on the same adventure yet he has been driven crazy because he has spent the last 7 years on this island. Lara and her boat captain Lu Ren are taken captive and forced to work in Vogel’s labor camp. This last all but A few minutes, Lara escapes during a scuffle and is able to get away without getting shot.
She escapes into the water and escapes down the river. She’s headed for the water fall and makes a desperate grab on a broken down rusted plane. She makes it inside, and as soon as she does the plan goes over the fall and gets stuck between the two mountains, she makes it out with a parachute and falls to the ground. One of Vogel’s men finds her and attacks her, they wrestle around and she drowns him. Then she sees someone off in the distance and gives chase. When Lara finally catches him she realizes that the man she was after is her dad.
She can’t believe it and neither can he. She finds out that he has chosen to stay there and watch this group he calls Trinity. Because they cannot open the tomb because it could release death upon the world. However Lara and Richard are caught and when they are she is forced to open the tomb. Which Vogel plays on her emotions because of her Dad. He threatens him and so he gets what he wants from Lara. They venture inside he tomb. Many puzzles were solved, and it reminds me of the game! They discover the truth. The Queen has willingly placed herself in the tomb to sacrifice herself and save the village and possibly world. Lara discovers this and warns everyone. Unfortunately Vogel has his mind set getting what he came for and leaving, which means he has to leave with the body of the queen.
The end of the movie shows us the death of her father, and Vogel on their original mission. Lara is the only one who escapes the tomb, and when she gets back to London she signs the papers to gain control of everything her father left behind.
This movie was amazing and yes I did spoil it, but I left out some things. There is a couple scenes at the end that led me to believe there will be a sequel. Also I feel like the movie was very well done. It follows the source material, casting was great! Alicia Vikander was amazing as Lara Croft! If you haven’t seen this movie go see it!
You see a girl who could have been rich, surviving on her own. She is pushing her limitations and the movie is non stop action. I feel like this could reignite the franchise that was lost in the early 2000s. While the story is differs a bit from the 2013 video game, the change to me is well accepted. What child wouldn’t go looking for their lost parent? Who wouldn’t be curious enough to do that? There is just so much I could say about this movie!
I give this movie an 8/10! Go see it. Best video game to movie adaptation yet!
