Terminator Genysis released July 1 2015. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke as John Connor and Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese. Also in the movie was JK Simmons, Matt Smith and Dayo Okeniyl.
The movie starts out in 2029 Kyle Reese is narrating and telling the story of the war between the Humans and the Machines and explaining judgement day which in this film started in 1997. He then begins to focus on the story of John Connor (Jason Clarke) telling about how he was a prophet like he knew the machines moves and what was going to happen. Of course he does, his entire life prepared him for this fight, and he knew exactly what was going to happen before it did happen. His mother trained him for this.
We finally see the resistance as we know them, Kyle Reese is talking to John Connor in private about planning the final attack on Skynet to take it down. This current moment is when John Connor realizes that sending Kyle Reese back to 1984 is the last effort he has at winning the war. So their attack is on the time machine while another team is attacking the Skynet main headquarters to shut down Skynet for good. The attack was successful and John successfully gets Kyle back to 1984. Right before Kyle is sent through time he witnesses John Connor being attacked, which is where Matt Smith comes into play. Right after this Kyle starts to have memories that up until this point had never existed.
Kyle arrives in 1984 right after the first Terminator that originally appeared in the first Terminator movie. However the time line had been changed, the past was different and the first Terminator had arrived to protect Sarah Connor 11 years prior in 1973. He protected her and kept her safe from a T1000 and trained her for the future to come. To me this was all okay because it was an alternate time line, not the same one we had followed through T1 and T2 Judgement Day. As far as the events of the original T1 they have now been changed, Sarah Connor wasn’t an oblivious waitress and Kyle Reese didn’t die, and instead of a T800 they were chased by a T1000 which in the previous timeline as I mentioned hadn’t existed until T2 Judgement Day.
So after taking down the T800 and the T1000 it was revealed that in the 11 years Sarah’s protector had been there he had been building a time machine so that they could go to the future and stop judgement day. Sarah was dead set on 1997, but honestly since the past had already changed, more than likely that future didn’t exist and judgement day would have been delayed. Kyle Reese had remember something about a program called Genysis an early child hood memory about its release date and him telling himself in the mirror that Genysis was Skynet. This was all happening in 2017, so changing the past in fact did change the future and delayed Judgement Day 20 years. Originally Judgement Day wouldn’t have happened in 1997 because of the events of T2, and T3 Rise of the Machines.
Sarah and Kyle decide that 2017 is the best shot to stop judgement day and end Skynet, so that’s where they go. The plan was for Arnold’s “pops” character to meet them in the future and execute the plan of stopping the Genysis program from releasing. However plans never happen like that, there was a major issue with the police and of course there was a Terminator posing as an officer. JK Simmons character who was alive in 1984 (he was one of the cops being chased by the t1000, Sarah saved his life) remembered what Sarah and Kyle looked like and offered assistance to help them escape. During their escape plan, and after “Pops” arrived John Connor shows up from 2029, which is still the same John Connor that we had followed from T2 Judgement Day.
He would show up and provided assistance to Kyle and Sarah to gain their trust. While escaping the hospital Kyle found out that John wasn’t exactly how he remembered him. The scene when Matt Smith’s character attacked John Connor it turned him into a new type of Terminator, made him completely metal nearly like the T1000 but a better model the metal seemed to be alive instead of just liquid. Which was a pretty cool terminator because he was nearly indestructible. Except for really powerful magnets, something like a CT scan machine which was the escape plan for the group so while he was held by the magnet Sarah, Kyle and “pops” got away.
The plan now is to get inside of the Genysis building and destroy it with C4, their advantage “Pops” had been on the construction team that built it. What they did not anticipate is the fight with John Connor to get to this point. It was a big mess of explosions the best one being on the bridge with the school bus.
The ending of this movie was great, John Connor was destroyed by exposing his metal and starting the time machine, “Pop’s” was upgraded from a T800 to a T1000 when he was thrown into the liquid metal with his CPU intact. Kyle Reese lived, and Sarah Connor fell in love with him anyway. Even though this did change up the time line the movie has potential to lead to a couple of sequels potentially retelling the story up to the point of the war.
I give this movie 8/10
*Amazing effects, and explosions are always a great thing when going to a terminator movie.
*Seeing parts of the war we had never got to see before made it worth the first 25 minutes of the movie.
*Kyle Reese survives 1984 and 2017 and also meets his 13 year old self.
*Sarah Connor wasn’t oblivious to what was happening which to me gave the character the depth we seen in T2 Judgement Day.
The only thing that I can say about this movie that wasn’t to great was the confusion with the time line it did change a lot of things up that we had all been used to, but hopefully it works out for the better.
