The Flash Season 1 Finale show to me was the best ending to a season on the CW network in a long while. We have Barry Allen as the Flash, who has been keeping Central City safe from a wave of Meta Humans and other terrible bad guys, and a choice to go back and save his mother. With this chance though comes the possibility of Barry not being the Flash, not living with Joe and Iris, or having a chance to ever meet Kaitlyn and Cisco. Everything could be changed in one move, and it was all Eobard Thawnes Idea.
Eobard Thawne or the Reverse Flash has been watching Barry Allen from early child hood or since he arrived and killed his mother 15 years ago. The man went as far as watching everyone in Barry’s life. He studied him and made sure that he would eventually become the Flash as he knew him. He needed a way to get back to his time in the 25th century and didn’t contain the ability to use the speed force anymore to time travel.
The show starts out with Barry talking to Harrison Wells AKA Eobard Thawne or Reverse Flash. He wanted to know why his mother had to die. The simple response was that Eobard hated Barry. I mean of course he hated Barry they were mortal enemies the complete opposites of each other but Barry was always better. Barry has to make the decision to trust Wells (Thawne) even though he knows that it could all be a trap to get him out of the picture so he could kill his friends or not be able to stop him in his attempts to go back to the future.
Barry goes to his family and friends of course, wanting advice. Joe and Iris told him to do it, to follow his heart and do what he needed to do. His dad however told him no, that he may not end up being the man he is today and they couldn’t risk that. The scene between Gustin and Ship was emotional and great, for me it felt like Ship was coming full circle. Again though he did make Barry realize that even though his mom was gone the consequence of changing the events of the past could make for a different future where he may not have been the Flash.
Finally a decision is made and Barry decided to listen to Wells (Thawne) and go back to save his mother. As well all know this requires Barry to run, and think about that night about his mom and what he could have done differently this reminds me a lot of the Flashpoint Paradox. So in order for Barry to get into the Speed Force he would need to hit Mach 2 which he does rather easily considering he hadn’t been “fast enough” all season. Cisco then would start the Particle Accelerator up, and as soon as Barry hit that it would break open a link to multiple Universes. Sort of like an Infinite Crisis.
Thawn had been planning to build a time machine, he tasked Cisco with doing that for him. During their conversation however Thawne let Cisco know that he had been affected by the particle accelerator as well. We all know Cisco can feel vibrations we had seen this a few times throughout the show, so I mean it wasn’t surprising he could see the sequence of his death that was in an alternate time line. Thawne revealed that Cisco was a Meta Human, and wanted him to know who had gave him the abilities. This was kind of a touching moment at first because we could see that Wells (Thawne) had grown to be attached to the people he was with every day. He really could look on Cisco as though he was his son, but also let him know he had a good reason to kill him.
Barry traveled back in time 15 years, and saw the events of that night unfold before him a little differently because this time he was a speedster and could see what was actually happening instead of just the lightning that he had seen as a child. As the event unfolded his future self, which had the white lightning bolt emblem on his costume, motioned for him to stop. This made Barry change his mind he waited until his future self was gone, and for the Reverse Flash to stab his mother and made his way out of the closet. He told his mother who he was let her know that everything was okay and watched her die again just as he did 15 years before. Being a hero is hard, making the choices that will be better for the world instead of just for yourself really shows how far the young Barry Allen has come and his intentions as a hero. I liked this part of the show the best, because making the decision to let his mother die after this had pushed him to go into Forensics to start with was the decision of a hero.
While Barry was saying goodbye to his mother again, the rest of the world was getting ready to give Eobard Thawne a proper send off by sending him back through his time… while they were waiting none other than Jay Garrick’s original Flash helmet came flying out of the worm hole that was open. Thawne acted as if he was scared and needed to go at this exact moment. How awesome would it have been had Jay Garrick had shown up the original Flash! He could have given Barry so much advice on what he can do and would have been a great mentor to him. Also this opens up the possibility that Earth 2 is full of Golden Age heroes meaning that they have a Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and all. The Justice Society of America.
Thawne wouldn’t ever get a chance to leave, Barry would come storming back and sonic punch the time machine with Thawne in it. Thawne was immediately angry, and screaming was upset that Barry had this chance and didn’t save his mother to change the time line. Barry and Thawne fought, and it looked as though for a minute Barry was keeping up with him but for some reason a weakened Reverse Flash was again able to overcome Barry. This time however neither one would win. The one thing that I hadn’t really counted on happened, Detective Eddie Thawne decided that he would erase himself and Eobard out of existence. He shot himself in the heart, he executed himself for the greater good. So in the end Eddie Thawne, just a detective and cop was just a big a hero as The Flash. Another heroic moment to tie up a lot of the plot line as to why Eddie and Iris wouldn’t end up together, also the fact that he made sure everyone he cared about was safe. As Eddie was dying the Reverse Flash was slowly changing back into his original appearance that we had seen in a flash back right after his arrival. He let Barry know that he couldn’t survive without him. After all of this, a black hole formed above Central City, Barry knew what he had to do, and the show ends with Barry running up into it to stop it from destroying the city.
Hopefully erasing him from existence will undo some of the wrong things he had done, such as killing the Harrison Wells. I did see that Tom Cavanagh was slated to be in the next season which means that Harrison Wells might possibly be back! We also see that Kaitlyn will eventually be Killer Frost, and now we know that someday, hopefully soon that Cisco will be Vibe! The season finale really wrapped things up well gave us something to look forward to for season 2. I want to see how things will play out with Thawne gone, because he was a mentor to Barry teaching him how to be the Flash. I hope Harrison Wells is alive as well, because he would be an amazing edition to the team and Star Labs.
For the first time I am giving a 10/10
-The show is amazing, great characters, great story.
-The costumes are spot on, the look is amazing.
-Barry Allen and Iris West-Allen
-All Star Team up, was a great episode, as well as the Finale.
This show has the potential to go on and on, as long as the story remains fresh they could have a good run like Arrow and Smallville. Maybe not as long as Smallville, but still a great future ahead indeed.
