The season started out with the aftermath of the fall of Shield, which was done during Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier (2014). The start of the season was hard because the agents who were left under Coulson’s watch had to rebuild what was left of Shield sort of like starting over. Hydra really brought down the organization.
The season would continue on introducing the Deviners which would be used to evolve an Inhuman to their true form. Providing them with their abilities. Which is what Skye went through during the mid-season finale. Raina also went through the change which would affect her appearance, eventually leading her to join up with Cal and attacking Shield to get to Skye.
The episodes leading up to the season finale, were about Skye adapting to her new found abilities, and Shield trying to find more powered people to get them on the Index. As well as Coulson getting closer to Hydra and figuring out what they wanted with the Inhumans or powered people as they were called at first. We also go get to see Deathlok or Mike Peters as he makes an appearance helping Coulson and company get inside of one of the Hydra meetings.
We even get to see Robert Gonzales form what he would call the real Shield because he didn’t trust Coulson. This kind of felt a bit rushed to me and not well played out I mean I know it was for six episodes, but if this was going to be a good story arc it should have gotten at least 10 episodes. This would have worked well with the Hydra fall out, because agents faithful to Coulson would have to make a choice. The choice that could possibly break up more of the family and really show where Coulson stands for Shield. Although he would eventually cave and work under Gonzales up until his death.
At one point we thought we would get to see a redemption of Agent Grant Ward, who turned on his team because he was affiliated with Hydra. Unfortunately that was cut short and as always he couldn’t be trusted. This kind of upset me most out of the entire season, because I felt Ward wanted a shot at redeeming himself, but it was all to get Agent 33 back inside to screw the agents again. Now on to season 3 he will be one of the main villains. The group however got some revenge I supposed you would call it he did murder Agent 33 which was his girlfriend who was disguised as Agent May to screw with Hunter and stop him from saving Bobbi.
Skye (Daisy) and her mom Jiaying finally met at the secluded community for the Inhumans. They were off to a good start she was teach Skye to use her abilities, but Skye didn’t want to be secluded from humans, she had lived with them for 26 years it was all she knew. She wanted to be an Agent of Shield, and work with Coulson and help them, but Jiaying wouldn’t let her. I understand completely where Jiaying was coming from but she made a choice for a whole group of people that could have meant their death and should have known better. Jiaying made the choice to save her people and turned on her daughter, for her love of humans she even went as far as giving Cal his chemistry project that made him super strong and sent him after Coulson to stop him and shield from looking for Skye.
Her efforts would fail, and would get a few of her people killed, even herself. Fitz created a device to stop Gordon from leaving the room he was in, he could still teleport but just not out of the room. He would eventually teleport himself onto a pole that Fitz was holding which would kill him, while holding a Terrigen Crystal which would fall to the floor. Coulson would dive to catch it, the crystal would break and start to turn his arm into a statue, Mack would amputate Coulson’s arm with an Axe.
Skye during all of this was fighting her mother on the deck of the ship her mother Jiaying who wanted to kill everyone on the ship with the Terrigen Mist would try to kill her daughter. Skye did push one of the Quin Jets into the ocean, which stopped her from releasing the crystals in a highly populated area, for now. Jiaying was attempting to take the life force of Skye, while Skye begged her to stop. She did momentarily after Skye pushed the Quin Jet into the ocean, Skye had healed it seemed and Jiaying restarted the process. Cal saves Skye, and kills Jiaying, getting redemption for everything he had done because of her and failing to save Skye all those years ago. So in the end the monster that they all feared had become the hero for his family. I thought this was pretty great because all Cal ever wanted was to have his family back, which can really make you lose touch with reality. He finally had that.
One last thing before I wrap this up, what was that stone that took Simmons? I mean did she open the case on accident? Or was it opened… I really hope they answer these questions quickly in season 3, one of the reasons I enjoy the show is the chemistry between Fitz and Simmons.
Now that we know there will be a season 3 and Ward will be one of the main Villains for this season we know they are going to continue with Coulson hoping they can change Ward, or even maybe put him through the Tahiti project, giving him a new life. Also with Ward being the big bad, whose going to step up and take over for Hydra, I assume they are all hiding out since Von Strucker was taken out so easily in Avengers Age of Ultron.
The one thing we can take from this season is the team believes in Coulson, and he’s been in contact with Fury, and Maria Hill the entire time. So he never really has been alone. Which was an awesome tie in to Avengers Age of Ultron as well. The show is great, it really has picked up and shows us that the Cinematic Movie Universe and the TV Universe needs to be one in the same. This is really what makes the MCU so great the fact that the characters we all follow are all on the same plane of existence and not in several different Universes. I hope to see more great entertainment..
I give this season an 8/10.
-Great tie in to Avengers Age of Ultron.
- Lady Sif was back which is always great!
-More involved with the Inhumans and Kree
-The story played out well and made for great entertainment and really picked up during this season! Here’s to Season 3 getting better!
