The Walking Dead Season 7 Premiere
This episode picks up right where Season 6 left off. The group is still being held by Negan and his group "The Survivors". Negan is still going through and trying to pick who he is going to kill. We can clearly see that Rick and the rest of the group are terrified, no one has really gotten to them like this in the past and if they did they we're killed quickly. For example the people of Terminus held them hostage and they still escaped, murdering them all. I just don't think this event will have the same out come for anyone.
Like the trailer promised we see an exchange between Rick and Negan. We see Rick promise to kill Negan sometime in the near future. Well Negan just isn't to happy about that so he drags Rick into the RV and they go for a little drive. Negan seems as though he might want to torture Rick away from the group or maybe just maybe he is going to cut his hand off! But we don't see any of that. What we do see is Rick trying to be tough and trying to make the best of a terrible situation. He even at one point tries to use his hatchet to kill Negan, who has an assault rifle. Negan can see that he hasn't fully gotten to Rick so he grabs the hatchet and throws it on top of the RV and tells Rick to go and get it. Rick being hesitant at first is forced out into the zombie horde. Rick scrambled around pushing zombies away and as he was doing it we could see flashbacks of what was happening the night before. Rick was still trying to process everything and Negan kept forcing him to think on that night while trying to recover the hatchet. Rick made it to the top of the RV and Negan started shooting at him. Rick tried to escape but it failed and ended back up in the RV. Negan decided that after a talk it was time to head back to the rest of the group. This was really showing us how Negan can screw with Rick that he pretty much owns him after what had happened.
While Rick is being tortured we get to finally see who Negan killed. Most of us have been waiting a long time for this. At least 4-6 months. There are some fans who think they have it figured out, there are some fans who made some guesses. Well from what I can see most of us were partly right. So the first person to die from our group at the hands of Negan was Abraham. I know why Negan done it, he was getting payback for the men he had lost. I mean clearly Abraham is a tough guy, and whoever was first would have still been a loss to the group, but to me it wasn't as heartbreaking as it was expected. The next death didn't even have to happen, but it did and I think that's going to be the one that is hardest to cope with after this episode. Daryl decided after Abraham met Lucille that he was going to move, and punch Negan. The entire group was told that if they move it wouldn't be in their favor. The exact line was, "If you move, I will shut this shit down" which clearly means he would have beaten them all to death. So now because of Daryl Dixon and his heroics we are going to lose another member. However this time the process of choosing wouldn't take so long. Negan ready's Lucille and I'm sitting there thinking that he's gonna kill one of the women, possibly Maggie, or Michone because they mean a lot to Rick. I was wrong. The bat came crashing down into Glenn's skull. Yeah Glenn the pizza delivery boy who saved Rick from walkers in Atlanta in season 1, who was with the group through the entire show, and a father to be. The death scene was comic book accurate. I am sad to see Glenn go, but I believe this will be a big part of what fuels Maggie and the rest of the group to eventually turn on Negan and fight back. The show does different things than the comic, but this was just spot on.
When Negan and Rick arrive back at the group, Rick is still looking at Negan like he wants to kill him. Negan doesn't appreciate the way Rick looks at him so he decided to screw with him some more. He has guns placed to the back of the head of everyone, and pulls Carl off of the ground. Gets a pen from Simon (Negans right hand man) and draws a line on Carl's left arm. He pushes carl to the ground and hands Rick his hatchet. He then forced Rick to pick up the hatchet and cut Carl's arm off. If Rick doesn't do this everyone in the group is dead, Negan keeps pushing Rick and keeps pushing him. Rick finally gives in and grabs the hatchet. Negan stops him, and lets him know that he's the one in charge now and he answers to him. Rick agrees, mostly because he has no choice.
Negan explains that they all work for him now, that they can start gathering stuff for him. He lets them know that they have one week to get him an offering. He provides them with transportation, loads Daryl up and they all drive off.
The episode ends with Rick, Maggie, Carl and the rest of the group mourning the loss of Abraham and Glenn. They're all trying to convince Maggie to go home, but she just wants to stay with Glenn. She eventually agrees, but has to take Glenn with her. We also see Eugene and Rosita and Sasha are discussing why to do with Abraham. Sasha finally says she's taking him with her. The episode closes with Rick getting into the RV to head back to Alexandria.
This episode was great. It was extremely brutal. We really see Negan breaking Rick down. We know exactly how hard that is Rick has come out on top in every situation he has faced. I don't think this situation will be any different, but I do think we will see a season full of Rick trying to find himself again like he has in the past. I believe it will be at least half a season before Rick realizes that he can take Negan out. I feel like the entire group Daryl included will have to take time to heal after the events of this one episode. We lost two characters one who had been there the entire show.. except for the pilot. Abraham who first appeared in season 4 lasted two seasons in the show. The Walking Dead will take a gruesome turn this season and it's going to be great.
I give this episode a 10/10 it's been the best episode of this show yet!
Things to take away from this episode are:
*Negan is in full control
*Rick is broken
*Glenn is dead and Daryl is sort of responsible
*Abraham is dead, Negan is responsible
*The group is scared and broken
I can't express how excited I am to continue this season. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has brought so life back into the show that I felt it was lacking in the past couple of seasons! It's gonna be a good year for fans of the show.
