The Punisher
Marvels Netflix series The Punisher premiered on November 17th. The Punisher was brought in during the Netflix series Daredevil with its season 2 run. Jon Berenthal plays Frank Castle/The Punisher.
The series picks up right after Punishers appearance in Daredevil had ended. He was chasing down the last few people that was left that had anything to do with the death of his family. Afterwards we pick up about 6 months later. Frank has tried to live life as normal as he could. Working construction, and just trying to deal with what has happened with his family.
We follow him through meeting Micro, and getting introduced to his family as the season progresses. We also get to see more of Frank Castle’s back story when he served in the Marines. We get to see him serve and do some terrible things as apart of a top secret team. Through the flashbacks you can see glimpses of what we know as The Punisher.
We also get introduced to the Homeland Security team that’s investigating what’s happening with Frank. During this we also meet Billy Russo, who at the moment is the head of Anvil. Billy “works” for William Rollins, who is apart of the CIA. This group figures out Castle is alive, and starts to target the members of the team they served with that are still alive. This serves the purpose of the story arc, Frank and Micro are trying to get bring this information to the right people and they are unsure of who they can trust.
I feel like Frank is still trying to cope with the loss of his family, but I feel like their is just more added drama with bringing back members from a life he tried to leave behind. I also feel like while there was a lot of action there could have been more. The story serves a purpose of Frank knows that the stuff he has done while serving wasn’t on the up and up, but he feels like he has no way to bring that to the right people. It also brings out a side of Frank we really haven’t seen and that’s this broken side who really doesn’t know what to do with himself after all the fighting. The thing with The Punisher is when his family was murdered Frank Castle died, there was only The Punisher that remained.
There was some high points of the show.. Billy Russo(Jigsaw) is one of them, he played this caring guy who seemed concerned with the people in his life such as Castle, and Madani (Homeland Security). Then you see this maniac side of him where he slaughters people and has no remorse. He made the show being a great villain. Madani was good also, she knows Castle has some information, doesn’t know what and she sort of plays the middle ground between Castle, Russo and Rollins. Up until the very end anyhow.
The low points are the character introductions, such as Micro. We get to see his origin story span across a few episodes, and we also watch as he watches Frank interact with his family. His family of course kind of replaces what Frank lost for a bit, and we see this family man side of Frank Castle. I mean it’s good and all for character development to see that Frank after everything can still be a good man, but as a Punisher fan I don’t really wanna see him “stalk” a random woman who “accidentally” hit Frank with her van. Micro proves to be helpful, and Frank of course uses that to his advantage. Frank also protects his family and helps Micro out because through the episodes of the series he couldn’t rightly be there for them.
My final review of the show is that the episodes were long and some were just drawn out and drama filled. They were slow and the pacing almost left little to be interested in. As I said previously the show needed to be more about the Punisher and less about Frank. However I understand that drama makes for good TV for average viewers so I can’t really score them on that alone. The action was great, the character development helped drive the story. I feel like we got more of a background on Frank other than he as just a mad man running around murdering the gangs of New York.
I enjoyed this show, up until the ending. The action scene and the final fight was amazing, but I feel like the ending was watered down. Hopefully if there is a season 2 its more action filled.
My final score is 6/10!
