The Flash Season 3 Episode 1 "Flashpoint"
The season premiere of the Flash is here and it has been highly anticipated. Finding out what happened to Barry Allen and team Flash at the end of season 2 knowing that Barry had went back in time to stop the Reverse Flash like he has always wanted to. What did this all change?
The show picks up 3 months after season 2 ended. Barry Allen has been living with his parents, yes Nora and Henry Allen are alive! He still works for Central City PD, and is living the life he felt was taken from him. He even works up the courage to ask Iris out. Not that he should need to because he's already done it so many times before, I guess even the Flash fears rejection.
Unlike the comic version of "Flashpoint" Barry still has his speed. However we see him gradually start to lose it after a while. Barry starts to lose his memories of the old time line his old life.
We also have a couple of new speedsters introduced in this episode. One of which is Wally West also known as Kid Flash, he is the main Flash of this time line. The other is the Rival, and his name speaks for himself he is in every way Wally's rival. Seeing these two characters in live action was great, even though it seems like it may be short lived at least we finally got a glimpse of what could be!
Barry also has a secret, besides being the fastest man alive. Eobard Thawn is still alive, and is in a cell that pretty much stops his speed. He is still alive and well just locked up and seems to be unkept and starving. Seems like Barry is taking some of what he seen Zoom do.
Things start to go bad for Barry, he starts to realize that because of him some people's lives aren't the way he remembers them. He notices things being different and notices as those things change he starts to lose more of his old life. Reverse Flash explained it as time starting to settle, that the current time line would eventually take the place of their time line. This wouldn't benefit either of them, mostly because Barry would feel guilty and start to lose his speed, while Reverse Flash would have no reason to exist. The more Barry uses his speed the more he starts to forget.
The thing that seems to get to Barry the most is how different his adoptive dad Joe West is in this time line. Joe is an alcoholic that doesn't care about his job, and really doesn't have any involvement with his kids. You can tell through the episode that Barry feels responsible, and has guilt because he remembers his Joe and this wasn't his Joe.
Barry decides it's best to reveal himself as the Flash. He wants to help Wally defeat the Rival. He tries to help Wally, but with Barry's powers starting to go Wally fell into a dumpster where Barry unmasked him. Wally led him back to his hideout where Iris was shocked that he did. Barry explained himself to both of them and they decided to reach out to Cisco. Cisco is a bit different, still the same genius just a rich one, who owns Star Labs. Barry also kidnaps Caitlyn Snow who is a pediatric eye doctor in this time line, not a scientist. They all decide to go after the Rival.
Barry and Wally race off, Flash and Kid Flash. You can tell that Barry even weakened by losing his memories, is still a lot faster than Wally. They find the Rival and Wally doesnt listen to Barry. He decides that he can take on the Rival himself, how ever he can't. Wally ends up getting injured with a steel pole stabbed through him. Barry of course feels guilty, kind of like how we seen on Earth 2 after the loss of Joe West. He then takes on the Rival. Barry and the Rival seemed to be equals. Barry turns to team Flash. Iris pretty much gives him a pep talk and that gives him the focus he needs to stop the Rival and his two tornados. Barry finally knocks him out, but as Barry turns back to Wally the Rival moves in to kill Barry, but Joe West is there to take the Rival out.
Barry reveals himself to Joe, and helps Wally. They get back to Ramon industries with Wally, but he isn't healing like he should be. That moment is when Barry decides that he has to undo what he's done. He asks Iris to help him, goes and says goodbye to his parents, and goes back to Reverse Flash. He releases Eobard so they can go back and kill his mom, and reset everything. Reverse Flash would have to carry the fastest man alive to their destination because he had nearly lost all connections with the speed force. They each go back to that night, their previous versions disappear from existence and Eoabrd Thawn kills Nora Allen, and drops the Flash off at his home.
Barry walks in and can quickly see what he has caused. Wally and Joe are together, they each know Barry and reacted to him like they should have. Barry mentioned Iris and Joe stormed out of the room. Wally let Barry know that Iris and Joe wasn't speaking. Barry knew right then that things had changed and he needed to find out to try and fix those things.
The show ended with Doctor Alchemy being revealed.
This episode for Flashpoint wasn't what the comics or the animated movie is, but it's a thing of it's own just like this show has been. The Flash on CW is probably the best comic book series outside of the Netflix Marvel series. We are going to see an aftermath of this episode I believe through out the season so that's what makes it great! Some great things to take from this episode:
We finally got to see Kid Flash.
The Rival made his first appearance.
Barry, making the decision to fix the time line.
Dr. Alchemy's appearance.
Barry and Iris in the alternate time line.
I give this episode a 8/10. Barry having his powers was a bit much, but the twists of being in that time line effecting his abilities was good. I can't wait to see how this all plays out and effects the other CW DC universe shows. Check out The Flash new episodes Tuesdays at 8pm Eastern!
