So I just finished up Daredevil Season One on Netflix Staring Vincent D’onofrio as Wilson Fisk, and Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil, or the man in the mask for the majority of this show. The show carries its own weight and to me is the best Marvel television show to date.
What makes it such a great show? Well one since they are in New York City there is the direct link to Avengers with that because the two main characters mentioned above are trying to fix their city after the disaster. Another reason is because it is dark and graphic, and nothing like any of Marvels other television shows to date. I would even as far as saying that the show is darker and more graphic then the current Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
The show starts out with Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson starting their law firm up and they meet Karen, a girl who was framed for the murder of one of her coworkers over some misplaced documents. This is where everything starts to spill over into the world of the Kingpin, or Wilson Fisk. Murdock would soon after begin appearing as the Man in the Mask protecting those that justice wouldn’t and starts to mess up Wilson Fisk’s plans. As the show continues more and more of Fisk’s “partnerships” as he calls them starts to crumble at the hands of Daredevil, and they start to find a link between the businesses and Fisk. This would all lead to Ben Urich following up with Karen and Foggy to write a story to expose the deception of Wilson Fisk, and to bring him down for what he really was a criminal. As the world seen him however he was a savior that wanted to put Hell’s Kitchen back together. After piecing everything together and not going into much detail because if you really want to know what exactly happens watch the show Daredevil faces off against the Kingpin after he escapes custody.
I will say this, for a bigger guy the Kingpin was hanging right with Murdock for the majority of their fight. Murdock would eventually get the upper hand and would take him out and the Kingpin was taken into custody.
This show is a much better take then the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Garner mess from 2003. I say mess not because of the story, but mostly because of the casting of some main role characters. However this show was spot on with its casting. Vincent D’onofrio is known for his television roles more than his movie roles and he shows us why with the character of Wilson Fisk. I would think there is no other choice for the character, because each episode you see him progress to becoming the crime lord that he is meant to be, or the Kingpin. You see the relationship with “Vanessa” building something he has longed for since his early teenage years, which makes the rage worse when something goes wrong. He even goes so far as bashing an associates head in with a car door.
Charlie Cox was a much better fit for Daredevil, he just had the ability to play off Matt Murdock and take the role as the Daredevil to the next level, with the intensity that it didn’t have in the movie beforehand. I would go as far as saying Marvel would be crazy to recast both characters if they were to cross over into the MCU.
As so it goes the Daredevil on Netflix has earned a 10/10 for me, It has darkness which is great, and is graphic enough to relate to the comic books. As we know the Daredevil goes to places that most heroes won’t and does things that most heroes won’t try to bring justice to people who rightly deserve it. So here’s to Daredevil and the hopes that Netflix doesn’t screw this one up and brings it back for a few more seasons.
