Warcraft
There aren’t many games out there that have been moved from the video game world into the movie world with great success. However I believe that this time Blizzard Entertainment has finally hit the mark with the game to movie franchise.
Warcraft starts out with the Orc clans trying to use the Dark Portal to gain access to Azeroth from the Outlands in which they are trapped. The Fel has taken over their land and destroyed it. It has also taken over their leader Gul’dan and he is intending to come to the new land and destroy it just as he has their current world.
He has given the power of the Fel to some of the most trusted Orc chieftains, but there are a few of the orc chieftains that do not agree with the way of Gul’Dan. They want to stand up against him and go back to the way of the Orc, their traditions. They don’t want to be come demons.
One of these Orc chieftains his name is Durotan. He is the chief of the Frostwolf clan and he doesn’t want to accept the ways of Gul’dan or be infected by the Fel. He would be forced to make a decision that would impact their new world.
On Azeroth the King of Stormwind Llane Wrynn and his trusted command Anduin Lothar are gearing up for a war. They know something is going on and they know that they have to protect Azeroth at all cost. Now remember folks this is before the world of warcraft so therefore this is the Humans standing against the Orc’s so they don’t have the rest of what would be the alliance backing them up.
We get to first meet Anduin Lothar in the great halls of Ironforge where he is being introduced to what is called a Boomstick or a gun. He is called back to Stormwind while he is there. The next scene would cut into him flying back into Stormwind on his griffin. Which is an amazing thing to see if you have played these games for as long as I have. He is immediately taken to King Wrynn to get more information.
Anduin is taken to the stockade where he finds Kadgar waiting on him. Kadgar is a mage, who was apart of the kirin’tor he left them to pursue his own knowledge. He is in Stormwind and was inspecting a body. What he finds would leads both Anduin and the King Wrynn in a frenzy. They both agree with the reports from the seven kingdoms and around that its time to contact the Guardian Medivh, who is the last guardian and the protector of Azeroth. The reason why is because Kadgar had discovered the cause of death was the Fel.
Now we are going to War. Kadgar and Anduin summon the Guardian and he is taken from Karazan to Stormwind where he is immediately taken to battle. During the skirmish he destroys nearly a whole clan of Orcs, afterwards he retreats back to Karazan. We can clearly see something is up with the Guardian, the only two who seem to notice it is Anduin and Kadgar.
During this Skirmish Anduin claims two prisoners. One is Garona and the other doesn’t really matter because he breaks free and is killed. Garona however is just half orc. She was a slave to Gul’dan and has known nothing else. She was taken prisoner to talk and provide what their plans are. Which she did without any threats. She was eventually trusted as apart of the alliance by King Llain and Anduin.
The Orcs meanwhile are taking in more and more prisoners, Gul’dan has to use their life force to power the Fel which will eventually power the Gate. However Orcs such as Durotan are starting to see how this isn’t the way they want to do things and that they disagree with the Fel and Gul’dan. and want to do things the way of the Orc.
Durotan decided to try to form an alliance with the humans that the Orc Horde has been killing off. So they decided to meet. During the Skirmish Blackhand who is loyal to Gul’dan surprise attacks them all. The humans and Orcs fight side by side. The Guardian musters up enough energy to stop the fighting and separates the two forces. Only to have Anduin’s son killed by Blackhand.
Durotan is seen as a betrayer and was taken before Gul’dan to be given the power of the Fel. He refuses. Durotan is betrayed by Ogrim Doomhammer and the Frostwolf clan is all but destroyed. Durotan is challenged to a duel and Ogrim watches as Gul’dan kills his chieftain. Meanwhile Draka, who is Durotan’s wife escapes with their new born child. He is placed in a basket and put into the river.
The Humans make one last attack on the Orcs at the Dark Portal they are holding their own and taking the Orc horde down. Gul’dan is able to open the portal, but only for a few moments. He has to open it with Medivh starts the incantation. Which means that Medivh brought the orcs here. Kadgar and Anduin eventually save Medivh and stop the incantation or the spell to open the portal and Gul’dan is left powerless. Medivh does his best to keep a portal open to Stormwind with his dying breath. Anduin catches his Griffin and goes to war.
By the time Anduin lands the fight is nearly over. He lands and immediately notices King Llane’s body laying on the ground. He runs to him and find the dagger that was given to Garona by the Queen. What Anduin didnt know is that the King told her to do it. That he would give his life to bring peace to the Orcs and the Humans. Anduin looked at her and knew that his King had been betrayed by the woman he was falling in love with. He was then placed into a duel with Blackhead and defeated him and was able to leave with the body of King Llane Wrynn. The movie ends with the funeral of King Llane Wrynn where Anduin Lothar would take over in his place until Varian would become of age to take the kingdom back. We cut to a scene afterwards where Draka and Durotans son is found by humans while floating down the river in his basket. His name is Go’el.
This movie was amazing. The story was great, it did start slow but it finished strong. The visual effects were excellent. The Orcs looked great! The most stunning thing of all was the cities, we seen Karazan, Stomrwind, Dalaran, Ironforge. They were all amazing. I just can’t say enough about this film. I cannot wait for the sequels.
I give this movie an 8/10
