I'm gonna have to disagree with this review.. the movie was good... not great by any means. The whole series of underworld movies were never meant to be big time blockbusters. There have been some known actors and no so well known actors filling the series since the original movie. This movie however tells the story of Selene (Beckinsale) continuing her quest as a Death Dealer a vampire warrior who has no place in this new world. She is hunted by her own kind and her enemies, because of her actions with Michael(Scott Speedman) and also killing the elders of her Coven Victor, and Marcus.
She has a new companion in this war, David who she resurrected in the last film. He helped her save her daughter, and allowed Selene to hide her. The movie continues to reveal that David is the son of Amelia, the elder who was killed in the first movie.
David and Selene were summoned to the eastern coven in hopes to train new Death Dealers. They however were double crossed by Semira and Varga. Semira wanted Selene's blood so they poisoned her, drained her nearly dry and was waiting for the poison to dissipate to drink the blood. Meanwhile Varga executed the Death Dealers to make it look like Selene had betrayed another coven, and the council. David and his father Thomas found Selene unplugged her from the machine being used to drain her and escaped. During the escape attempt Thomas was killed by Semira.
Like the first movie the Lycans had a mole, except this time it was a Death Dealer who helped lure Selene to the coven. She was the girlfriend of Marius the Lycan Leader. She thought she would get away with it, but Semira saw to it that she didn't.
The rest of the movie is all out war between Selene, David, the northern coven who provides refuge for the two of them and the Lycans. Selene is sort of killed but brought back by the Norse worshiping vampires. She appears stronger than before. David takes up his right full place as heir to the Eastern Coven, and has a part in taking out Semira. Mostly stabbing her in the throat as she bathes in the sunlight which is permitted by drinking Selene's blood.
Selene returns in time enough to face down Marius. Earlier in the film we see Marius injecting himself with vials of blood ever so often, now Marius is different from the other Lycans he is stronger and faster more able to control his rage and the change. We find out why during this fight segment. The blood he is using is Michaels, who he killed and drained between the last film and this one. Which was a crappy send off for the character. Sorry mister Speedman, I was hoping you could have returned with some blood vengeance. Selene goes on to lock herself in the training cage with Marius who appears to be beating her to death. Selene uses one of her new found abilities which is vanishing around, almost like teleporting. She comes around to the back side of Marius and pulls his spine out, we see Marius fall to the floor. The next scene David appears with his head in front of all the Lycans.
David, and Selene are made Elders of the coven, along with Lena from the Northern Coven. The movie ends with Selene at the place of her death and her daughter is walking to her.
The movie has a lot of action, and is fast paced. The story is so so, giving us a tie in that could lead to another movie. Some people seem to think that the story doesn't make sense or had little plot. It was nearly the same plot as the first movie with different characters. I felt like the only character development that was really pushed was Selene and David. The rest were just bit players in their world. Marius was alright, the fact that he was able to infiltrate the Eastern Coven and their fortress is epic, but he didnt last very long. Kind of like Lucian from the first movie, a big character build up to be a bad ass, dies in the end by being poisoned with silver bullets. Marius could have had a two movie character arc but his death was just bad writing. I did like the buildup of David, having him has Amelia's son and the heir to the coven was great. I hope we can at least get one more film out of the franchise. It has been a great line of movies, I know Kate Beckinsale as the main character can't last forever but if they can make another movie before 5-10 years is up she could play Selene one more time maybe two. I honestly hope that they can continue the story.
I give this movie a 6/10. Kate Beckinsale made this movie worth watching. Plus I have loved the series since 2003! Underworld: Blood Wars will not be a blockbuster hit, but for fans of the franchise it's a great movie. I don't really see why a lot of people would start with this movie with it being the fifth installment of the franchise.
