This episode starts right where episode one ended, Barry and team Flash are standing in Star Labs looking at Jay Garrick not knowing what to say or think. Barry of course doesn’t trust anyone after the events of season one so he demands that Kaitlyn run some test on Jay to make sure that he is a speedster like he says he is.
Jay explains to Kaitlyn that he is a scientist like Barry and like Barry had gotten his powers in his lab while he was working one night. You can tell through the conversation that Jay Garrick was the real deal to me. It seemed like he was genuinely a good guy just like Barry.
Kaitlyn runs all of her test, and the only thing abnormal is that he can regenerate quickly. Which means going through time could have somehow disconnected him from his full ability of the speed force just like it did Wells. It could be that he needs to recharge his powers like Wells had to so he could move at super speed again.
Barry has Jay put into a cell, and while doing so he alarmed that there was a fire so he races off to stop it. Barry quickly puts the fire out and starts to leave but is met with a Meta human that he doesn’t recognize. He can break down his cells and can control them as though they look like sand. Barry faces him without luck and races off back to star labs. Jay is out of his cell because of more testing and confronts Barry again about helping him. Jay tells him who he is up against and that the Meta human is called Sand Demon. Barry shrugs off the offer for help and has Jay put back into his cell.
The relationship between Barry and Jay is starting off rather rocky, he has been the Flash and pretty much on his own for a little over two years according to the conversation he had with Kaitlyn, and Barry is a year and 6 months in to being the Flash and has had help in every way possible. He should just listen to Jay irks me that he doesn’t, but I can understand why with everything that happened with Wells.
Joe and Patty Spivot are looking for their Meta human. They find Earth ones Eddie Slick, and release him after his alibi checks out. They do eventually encounter the real Sand Demon and Patty is taken as a hostage.
Throughout the episode Cisco and Dr. Stein are trying to find all of the possibilities of an open time stream that is allowing Zoom to travel to and from the different Earth’s. While doing so Cisco is also studying the evidence from the initial Sand Demon encounter and ends up having a vision of where Patty is being held and that Sand Demon has a bomb that he is going to use against the Flash.
Not knowing how to stop Sand Demon, he then turns to Jay Garrick for help. Jay who had his suit form his Earth decided to be the decoy considering that Sand Demon had no idea what Barry looked like under the mask. He was however missing his helmet which made its appearance in the season one finale as Wells was trying to leave. At that Barry knew he could be trusted, as did the rest of the group. They returned his helmet and the two of them were off to work on a way to save Patty.
Jay had to teach Barry how to use his speed to shoot lightning bolts. Barry really wasn’t getting it, but decided that enough time had been wasted. Cisco comes to Barry to tell him about what he had seen in his vision. Except it was more of a theory when he told Barry.
Dr. Stein was the only one in the room who seemed to catch on that Cisco was telling exact facts and knew way too much. He ended up confronting Cisco about it and Cisco had to tell him what exactly was going on. At that time Dr. Stein promised to help Cisco control his abilities and work through it with him.
Barry and Jay are off to rescue Patty from the Sand Demon. Jay with no powers really shows what kind of hero he is, not many heroes who depend on powers would go into a fight without them. Sand Demon did quickly figure out that Jay wasn’t the same and had lost his speed, but by that time it was too late. Barry had already stopped the bomb now all he had to do was stop Sand Demon, which he did with a lightning throw. The Second victim of the season that Barry has killed, it seems like he is becoming wreck less with killing the Meta humans.
Both Jay and Barry came to the aid of Patty Spivott and rescued her. They both went back to Star Labs and decided that since Zoom was a part of Jay Garrick’s world they could use his help. At that time Dr. Stein collapsed to the floor.
We then cut to a scene that looks like it could be from a different Earth or even the future of Harrison Wells. I hope we get to see more of a story and build on Harrison Wells, sans Reverse Flash. I also hope he comes to Earth One to work with team Flash.
So far this season we have seen a different side of Barry Allen. A side of him that wants to make sure he is stopping the Meta Humans from destroying Central City. This could be because of what happened with Wells, but I believe it’s because he knows putting them in prison and keeping them alive puts everyone and everything at risk. Which is fine by me I agree with it and like that the show is a little darker from season one.
I will give this episode a 7/10. It wasn’t the greatest episode but the ending gave us two possible stories to build on with: “What happened to Dr. Stein?” and “When is Harrison Wells going to make an appearance to Team Flash? Will he be the Reverse Flash?”
