The Flash Episode 1 Season 4
We picked up 6 months after season 3 had ended Iris, Joe, Cisco and Wally have apparently been keeping Central City safe since Barry went into the speed force. That is until a samurai shows up demanding that he gets to face the Flash. Of course Cisco and Wally try to stand up to the samurai only to fail. The samurai gives them one day to produce the Flash and makes threats of destroying Central City.
So this sends team Flash led by Iris, in a frenzy to figure out exactly what they’re going to do to produce the Flash. Cisco reveals that he has been working on for some time now a way to pull Barry out of the speed force. Iris tells him to drop it and they will figure something else out. At this point you can really tell that everyone misses Barry, but it’s really getting to Iris. She’s trying to be strong and keep everyone together but at the same time she’s breaking down, because she feels like Barry will never be back. I mean at this point if Barry did come back it would be a miracle.
Meanwhile Cisco goes to find Caitlyn. She’s working in a bar, apparently ran by metas. When Cisco shows up she just agrees to go with him. Seems like it was to easy considering we left Caitlyn as Killer Frost, I’m curious as to how she has a handle on her powers. Anyways Wally, Caitlyn, and Cisco go behind Iris back to try and bring Barry back. Their attempt fails and the system shuts down, or at least that’s what they thought! After the failed attempt, the speed force opens up and out runs Barry, he runs into a truck and just passes out. Back at Star Labs everyone is arguing and screaming at one another about why they can’t make an attempt at saving Barry again. While arguing Joe gets a phone call and the entire team is off to Central City Police Department. There they find Barry Allen, a broken and somewhat insane Barry Allen.
They take Barry back to Star Labs to run test, and have no idea what’s wrong with him. While they’re not able to figure out what’s wrong with him exactly, they are able to at least figure out what he’s writing, or at least some of what he’s writing. They still had no clue how to get him back, and they were running out of time. He just keep talking non sense and was just all over the place. I feel like that Barry was just in the speed force for a long time and it really screwed with his mind and caused him to be crazy when leaving.
Wally tried to masquerade as Barry, but failed nearly losing his leg against the samurai. Apparently the actor for Wally really stepped up his game this season, I enjoyed Wally through this episode more than I ever have in the last two season. Hopefully he can keep it up, because I feel like Wally will be a big part of the story this year.
Meanwhile Joe and Iris are talking about how you just have to have faith that things are going to work out. Iris really takes it to heart because she turns herself over to the samurai in hopes that Barry will save her. Afterwards a distraught Joe goes to Barry and begs him to save Iris. Of course Barry is still drawing symbols and acting all crazy. Than like a moment later his eyes start glowing red and he busts out of the containment unit in the pipeline, takes his new suit and runs after Iris. Apparently some time in the speed force helped Barry out. He’s fast now, no longer saying that he isn’t fast enough 10 times an episode. This really makes me happy for the Flash and excited to see where we go from here!
Barry is noticeably back at the end of the episode. He is excited to see everyone, claims he doesn’t remember anything except going into the speed force and then saving Iris. He is faster and seems to be stronger, so I mean there is that. After celebrating Barry’s official return we cut to a scene with Caitlyn, who as I mentioned before really hasn’t kicked her frosty side. She was back at the bar, quitting and when she got angry Killer Frost emerged but for only a few minutes. She’s either using something to control that side of her, or has a better control than I thought she did. The final scene was great!!! We see someone working on the Samurai, and while doing so talking with someone else. The scene opens up and The Thinker appears! He looks great, The Flash never disappoints on villains and their look!
I feel like there was more hype for this episode than what there should have been! Yes it’s the long awaited return from hiatus, but the pilot episode and each season premier for seasons 2 and 3 have been much better. I know that this was picking up 6 months after season 3 and everyone was in a state of shock not being able to depend on Barry so I will let it slide. I also feel like that since Barry is crazy fast now the show needs to have more action! On the other hand the supporting cast feels more like they’re coming into their roles as heroes, so hopefully they will be there to help him figure out tough situations and support him. I also hope they don’t have to tell him to run faster or that he can run faster because he’s the Flash. Obviously he’s faster now!
The Thinker, Devoe who was mentioned once or twice last season is now the big bad for this season. I have to say that he looked great just like I mentioned above! It’s a change from having a speedster as the big bad, and hopefully challenges the intellectual side of Barry.
While this episode was a little slow, and the action was limited to just a couple of scenes I feel like it was a solid episode. I’m excited to keep watching this season! I’m going to give this episode an 8/10!
