This movie starts out trying to tell the story of what happened between Rita and Zordon. I thought this would simply be great! I was so wrong.
After that butchering we cut to Jason Scott the hometown hero is shown dragging what appears to be a bull into a locker room and then running from the police. He wrecks his vehicle injures his knee and is placed on house arrest and must also serve detention on Saturday's. This is where he is introduced to the other rangers Billy and Kimberly. He helps Billy face down a bully and helps him out so Billy offers to help him.
They both get together and fix his house arrest monitor to where it isn't alerting the police and then they go to the Gold quarry. There him and Billy are going to dig. Jason ditches Billy while he's setting up explosions. He find Zack, Trini and Kimberly. Billy sets off an explosion and the group finds their power coins. They of course have to dodge security and police again and while running get hit by a train in Billy's moms van. The next morning they all wake up unharmed and okay. Ripping doors off their hinges and breaking sinks.
The next bit is showing them running and jumping and going on with their new "Super Powers". Eventually they find the "Command Center" a spaceship way way under ground, by swimming down to it and falling through a pool of water into the space ship. Zordon is completely out of character from how I remember him, he is judge mental and not helpful to the Rangers.
Bill Hader is about the only bright spot of the film. His Alpha 5 was great! Anyways the movie goes on trying to get the Rangers to morph and open the power grid. Putties we're rock monsters, the rangers had super powers and still couldn't take them on. They couldn't morph and had none of their abilities. Meanwhile Zordon wants them to morph so he can move out of the ship and take back his body.
Rita was found in the water by fishermen, she used the green power coin to I guess you would say to come back to life. Afterwards she started consuming gold to bring Goldar back to life. Again this was depressing. Goldar was a monster made completely of gold, instead of a flying monster armored with gold. Rita was also the green ranger. She killed Billy Cranston.
Billy was taken back to the "Command Center" and brought back to life instead of Zordon taking over his body. Finally the Rangers were able to morph. We finally get to see some wide shots of the Rangers fighting putty rock monsters. After this we get to see the Zords which looked amazing separated. The Mega Zord, looked awful. I understand change and a new look but this was just awful. They easily took out Goldar by stabbing him with their swords. Rita jumped to the Mega Zord and the Rangers slapped her into outer space. We could see her flying and freezing. I hope she eventually makes it to the moon and sets up her base. We see the Rangers after saving Angel Grove are now friends, still in detention and are now fully Power Rangers.
The mid credits scene brought up some interesting ideas for a sequel. I won't share that here... it was probably the second bright spot of the movie... Also Jason David Frank and Amy Jo Johnson made an appearance as well in the film as citizens of Angel Grove.
I give this movie a 2/10.
I feel as though it could have been more accurate to the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers series. I also feel like the movie was just a slap in the face to the Power Ranger fans who wanted to see this movie. They have 6 sequels planned. If I was Lions Gate I would not put money into this and take it elsewhere because the return will not be good.
