Logan
Logan released on March 3rd 2017, and this is set to be the last film of the 20th Century Fox X-Men franchise to feature Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier.
The film is set in the future the date is 2029 and Logan is going by his real name James Howlett. He is a limo driver. We get our first bit of action from Logan as a group tries to steal the wheels off of his Limo. He of course is asleep, he wakes up and rage takes over. He kills 3 of them men as the others escape. Afterwards we watch as Logan or James as he is now known goes through the days as a Limo driver instead of a crime fighting mutant.
We are first introduced to X-23 or Laura while Logan is at a funeral, afterwards Logan ends up at a hospital and is buying drugs. After buying the drugs a guy he doesn't know gets into his car. He knows that Logan is the "Wolverine" and wants to know why he's getting the drugs. Of course in Logan fashion her pretty much tells him off and continues on about his business.
The story so far is building up. I mean we are watching a man who at this point is nearly 200 years old drive a Limo while he's waiting to die. This however takes a turn when he ends up in Mexico. That's apparently where he has been living, but he is also hiding something. That something is a someone and it's Charles Xavier. They seem to be the only remaining two of the X-Men. We honestly never find out what happened to everyone else, but there is some hints to it throughout the story. Charles however is suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's because he doesn't really know where he is or who anyone else is until he has his medication. Oh yeah he is also taking seizures that are fatal to everyone around him mutants and humans alike. Logan has been taking care of him for well over a year at this point and they are hiding him from a group who are taking out all the mutants that they can find.
While Logan is out driving he gets a call from Gabriella. She works for this company Transigen who has brought the mutants to the brink of extinction. She has a small girl with her. The girl is X23 or Laura. Logan ends up accepting a job to take the girl to North Dakota. The man who met Logan earlier is from Transigen and he is after X23 to gather her up and take her back to the facility. Logan can't let that happen. The girl we find out is like Logan derived from his DNA possessing the same healing factor that he once had along with the adamantium that is on his bones.
Logan can see that the girl is wild just like him and can clearly recognize the anger. Logan goes back to Mexico to tell Caliban that he had a job and that they would eventually be getting out of the melting facility. While he is getting ready to leave they find the girls items and then the girl. She takes to Charles and he is communicating with her through telepathy. While they are packing up to leave the Transigen group finds them and all hell breaks loose. Logan of course slow in his old age and from being sick isn't having much luck taking out the military groups, but X23 is having no issues. She is a killing machine like Logan used to be. The finally all get into the Limo and escape.
Logan, Charles and X23 are on the run now. They're trying to teach this kid who has never been outside of a medical facility to act in the real world while hiding and it's challenging for Logan. They first hide at a hotel, but the cover is blown after Charles has a seizure and nearly kills or injures over 400 people. During this seizure we have one of the best kill scenes to date. Logan and X23 are apparently able to avoid the effects of Charles seizure and Logan makes it back up to the floor they were staying on to get Charles some medicine to stop the seizure. In doing so Logan takes out the Transigen guys why they are stuck in the telekinetic attack. As soon as Charles gets the injection they all fall. Except one wasn't dead but X23 makes sure he isn't getting up.
While they are driving we can see how the future has really upgraded the roadways large trucks seem to be all machines and automated. We also hear about the incident in West Chester in relation to the one in Oklahoma. Nearly 600 people were killed, Logan reacts quickly and turns the radio off. Forces Charles to take more medication and they drive on. While on the road they nearly have an accident and in turn they meet a family in need. They help the family get the horses back into the trailer and are invited to dinner. Logan feels like it's a bad idea but Charles insists that they go. Of course Logan is right because while they're at the farm house Transigen brings in X24. X24 is another mutant directly cloned from Wolverine. However he seems to have a slower healing factor than X23 but his rage is off the charts it seems to be all he knows. The family that invited Logan and group for dinner are all killed. Charles is stabbed by the X24 monster. Logan of course goes to Charles and carries him down to the truck. While Logan is trying to help Charles dies. This of course feels Logan with rage. He goes after X24. Who by this point had captured X23 and was taking her back to the Transigen group. Logan does what he can to hold off X24 but he just isn't able to hold his own. Lucky for him the man who invited him to dinner is still alive and runs X24 over with his truck into a shredder and shoots him several times at close range with a shotgun. Giving Logan and X23 time to escape. Meanwhile Caliban who is being held by Transigen steals a couple of grenades and sacrifices himself to allow Logan to escape.
Logan and the girl escape. The fight really took a toll on Logan. They bury Charles and continue on. The vehicle that they are in breaks down and Logan rages out and afterwards passes out in the road. Laura(x23) steals a truck and drives him to the doctor. Logan wakes up and the doctor tries to convince him to stay there and get treatment, but he doesn't. So him and the girl continue on. While driving Logan starts to go to sleep and Laura has to drive for him. They eventually stop so Logan can rest and the from that point on Logan is barely awake to even walk. The girl gets them to Eden as they call it. Which Logan thinks is fake because it's in X-Men comic book but they get there and meet up with the other escaped mutants. The mutants that we see escaping in Gabriella's video.
They give Logan some of the serum that helps make them stronger. It is helping him heal. The mutant kids are planning to cross the border and leave while Logan is still sleeping. He wakes up grabs the medicine and injects himself with the entire bottle. This sends him in a rage. Logan and X23 take out the military group with Trasigen. As they are doing this X24 is released. Logan tried to hold off X24 for as long as he could but the serum that he had taken had completely worn off and he was just Old Logan again. X24 ended up killing The Wolverine. Before he died however X23 used the adamantium bullet that Logan had been saving for himself to kill X24. Laura or X23 tried to help Logan, but he was to far gone. She buried him and as she walked away she turned the cross over to make an X and the credits rolled.
Logan was a story about a hero who had gotten old and was just living his life out waiting to die. He found a reason to live again but by this time it was already to late. This movie is in my opinion the best of the X-Men franchise. Was Jackman's best movie since X2. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the other Wolverine movies but this was so much better. I wish it wasn't Jackman's last movie but I understand moving on. I hope Fox decides to continue X23 Laura's story along with the new group of mutants and follow this time line out since it's not a part of the main X-Men timeline that they also produce. Maybe someday they will cast someone else as Wolverine but for now we have a great send off!
I give this movie a 7/10 the reasons for
that are the following. The movie could have explained the West Chester situation a bit better. Could have also give us a bit more backstory on what's up with Logan. I mean yeah hardcore fans are gonna get that he's aging and his healing factor is slowing down. Casual movie goers are going to be like why the hell is a man who can't be hurt limping? What's with that constant cough? Things like that will throw the casual movie goer off a little. However the relationship between Charles and Logan remained even in the state they are both in. Such a great movie to end with!
