Fear The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 1 "Monster"
We start the episode out where season one left off on the beach with the city starting to burn, Zombies attacking and the survivors trying to get to the boat Abigail. We see Nick who in season one is an addict and somehow barely survives the entire ordeal, running people on a small life raft to and from the yacht. He is going back for his mom, Travis and Travis’ son. After a small fight on the beach Travis and Madison, Chris and Alicia make it to the small life raft.
The group made it to the raft and they all made it to the boat. Which is where the episode will take place. Traveling on the boat arguing amongst each other about where they will go. While Alicia unknowingly talks to a group that could potentially attack them.
Travis and Madison seem to still be having some trouble wrapping their heads around the situation, they still want to help everyone and make sure everyone they encounter is okay. Strand is trying to make it clear to them that helping everyone and inviting them onto the boat is not an option. Strand is another character that I can tolerate, mostly because in a way he reminds me of how Rick would do things, not really trusting anyone outside of the group has his second in command in Nick and trusts him so hopefully he lasts throughout the run of the season here.
Alicia is in charge of the radio, which could have possibly been a bad idea because she was looking for someone to talk to trying to make sense of this world. She starts talking to a guy who says that he is stranded and needs help. She is trying to make a case to go pick up these strangers and of course she is denied. Why would anyone want to pick up someone they don’t know. This world hasn’t gotten to the group of people yet they are still trying to save and help everyone when it should be survive survive survive.
Daniel and his daughter Ofelia who lost someone close to them in Season 1 in Griselda are still with the group and are remaining pretty much silent. I believe they are just thankful that they have survived and are on the boat. Of course Daniel can see what the world has become as well as Ofelia because of the loss of Griselda they know it’s a world of who can survive and how to survive. You can see Daniel giving advice to Chris, and Ofelia somewhat speaking with Nick. Madison is coming to Daniel for more information on what he thinks is going to happen next. A character like these to really brings a good balance to the group. Daniel has a strong voice with the others, they all seem to trust him and respect him. He may help the group survive longer.
Chris is dealing with the loss of his mom and is going crazy over the ordeal. He hits Travis throws her body over board and then he jumps into the water to go Swimming of all things. A group of seven people on a boat in the middle of an ocean in the Zombie apocalypse and he wants to go swimming? I guess people handle stress differently. Honestly he’s lucky he didnt get attacked and killed. Nick jumped into the water after him to save him and bring him back onto the boat. Nick noticed that a boat had overturned and thought he heard someone so he swam over to that boat to make sure no one needed help. He swam under the Zombies in the water made his way under the boat and was attacked by a zombie. I just know Nick is trying to redeem for his addictions and make the best of a bad situation, but being reckless may end up causing him his life, and he is really one of the very few characters that I can tolerate on the show.
This show is again starting out slow. We know the characters we have a feel for them, we don’t need to go through an episode of meeting them again on a boat. Action would be great! I know its not The Walking Dead, but there needs to be a bit more action on the show. More zombies, and more people killing zombies. I understand 100% having the characters on a boat and having a buildup episode to something that is going to happen in the coming weeks, but with the first episode back you need a little more action than having a small zombie attack on the beach a possible attack in the water. This show could be amazing because its a story of the outbreak in the beginning and we are already seeing places start to evacuate and fall to the Zombie’s. I hope this show really picks up in the action, but I will continue to give it a chance and hope for the best.
5/10 for this episode.
