Fear the Walking Dead’s pilot started out somewhat slow. I mean it is supposed to be more of a prequel to when the outbreak started compared to the following of the Walking Dead with Rick being in a comma. Therefore I would expect the show to start out slow because it has to build to the point of the first zombie.
*Spoiler alert* the first zombie is spotted about 1 to 2 minutes into the show.
The show opens with Nick he looks to be in an abandoned building, which we later find out is a church. He appears to be homeless, and had spent the night there. He seems to be in a daze or coming off of a high when he is walking down the stairs and he is looking for Gloria. He keeps walking and calling for Gloria, who he does eventually find. For this show she seems to be patient zero the number one zombie. As we know from “The Walking Dead” when someone dies in this world they become a zombie, or walker. Seems to me that Gloria may have over dosed and died and turned while Nick and the other junkies were passed out.
Nick takes off running out into the street and he still seems to be disoriented he was freaking out at what he just saw and coming down off of a high. I felt as though he seemed terrified and in disbelief at what he had seen. He was then hit by a car, and arrested and taken to the local hospital where we meet his family.
Compared to the walking dead this family seems more together, well the husband and wife do. The kids however have their own problems, the daughter is in high school and seems to be more mature for her age. The son Nick, is a drug addict who cannot grasp what is happening around him. Seems a bit dysfunctional, but I mean look at Rick and his wife. They never could keep up with Carl, and she was sleeping with his best friend so I mean that has dysfunctional written all over it.
As the pilot continues we notice that more and more people are getting sick and reporting about the virus being widespread. After Gloria attacked the two junkies in the church that would have been 3 walkers. After that it would have just started multiplying at an uncontrollable rate. Which would eventually start chaos in the city, which we get to see a bit of during this episode.
Nick’s sister Alicia is still in high school and has a boyfriend, his name seems to be Matt. During one segment of the show Matt is telling her his mom and dad are still gone that they can go watch the sunset and go back to his place. Matt was a no show and as of the next segment had not replied to the texts she had sent.
Nick goes to his dealer for more drugs because he wants to forget what he has seen, well his dealer takes him to the river to kill him. Nick grabs the gun and shoots his dealer… He finds his parents and they all three come back, Nick’s dealer is now a walker. Nick hits him 3 times with the pickup truck his dad drives but that didn’t stop him, the three of them took off.
At one point through the show the school was closed after a half day, where a video was being viewed by Alicia and her friends, as well as Travis and Madison in the teachers’ lounge. This was the first zombie that it seems the police had encountered. He was shot in the body up to 6 times by my count could have been more. They eventually ended the zombie with a headshot. All the while Alicia was thinking that this video was fake that nothing like this could be real.
The show ended leaving us hanging of what’s going to happen next? What will the main characters do now that they know there is an outbreak of zombies and the dead are walking? Will they be able to stay together and survive or will the chaos split them up?
This show and group is a bit different so far from the group we had followed throughout the walking dead they really don’t seem to have much survival training. So this may be more interesting as an overall series watching these people grow as survivors. I know it seems like the same thing, but Rick, and Shane they were both officers so they were trained with fire arms. Daryl and Merle were hunters and trackers, so they were survivalist. So far for this group you have two middle aged teachers, a high school student and a heroin addict. I just hope in the next episode I see more walkers.
Overall the show was great, a great introduction to a new take on The Walking Dead! Fear the Walking Dead will catch on and be as successful as its companion show. May take some time to get a feel for the characters because of the difference between the two group so far but we will see! I just hope it doesn’t take 4 seasons to catch up to Rick and the group’s timeline.
*Travis seems to want to protect his family his old family and new family.
*Nick seems to realize now that what he is seeing is real I think he could clean up and become a necessity to the group.
*Madison and Alicia are one in the same used to doing things their way and on their own. This could cause some conflict with others that join the group but we will see!
I give a rating of 9/10- Just because the lack of walkers. This show is called “Fear” The Walking Dead. Not “Fear” the small numbers of the walking dead! More walkers please!
