Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange is the most recent film released by Marvel Studios in a long line of movies. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetal Ejlofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams, and Benedict Wong.
The movie follows Doctor Stephen Strange as he goes from world known neurosurgeon to a sorcerer. He does this because modern medicine cannot give him his life back after an injury to his hands. The injury is suffered in a car accident that leaves him stranded for hours. The doctors try their best to save his hands from being completely useless, but fail in every aspect.
Doctor Strange begins to struggle with the fact that he can no longer do his job, up to this point his job is his life. While I'm physical therapy, the therapist he was working with tells him a story of a patient who was paralyzed due to an injury, but through hard work was able to walk again. Strange found this man, and was told where to go and this is where his journey begins. Strange ends up traveling to Nepal to seek out Kamar-Taj. While doing so we get to meet Mordo. Mordo is the one who introduces Stephen to the Ancient one(played by Tilda Swinton).
Doctor Strange was looking to be healed so that he could go back to his life, but what he found was different than just healing it was a new purpose. He was drawn into the Mystic Arts, and like medicine he was good at it and was a quick study. After a while training with the Ancient One, Strange who of course is cocky begins to question everything. He even questioned the Ancient One and how she had lived for so long. His questions would all be answered when he met Kaecilius, a fallen sorcerer.
Kaecilius, once trained under the Ancient One, he was also one who asked to many questions. We see him at the first of the movie stealing something from the Ancient Ones library. What he had stolen was a way to contact Dormomuu of the Dark Dimension. This was supposed to be his way of getting eternal life.
Doctor Strange who at this point is still in training is thrown into this battle. He stands strong and protects the New York Sanctum after it's master is killed. He has Kaecilius captured for just a few moments, but he is stabbed and has to escape to Christine to get help. She helps him while he has a fight in the Astral realm. He leads Mordo and The Ancient one back to the Sanctum and Kaecilius is gone.
Strange confronts The Ancient One about how she has lived such a long life. Getting his information from Kaecilius, Strange knows how she lives so long. He reveals that she is drawing power from the Dark Dimension. Mordo doesn't want to believe it. The Ancient One leaves and promises that Strange will have backup if he needs it.
During the fight scenes we see Doctor Strange, get a new cloak. The Cloak of Levitation. With this he can levitate and fly and it also protects him. The cloak is alive and protects the one it chooses to wear it.
Mordo and Strange are once again confronted by Kaecilius, the fight ends up in the Mirror World, Strange didn't understand that they are stronger so everything goes wrong. They are out numbered until The Ancient One shows up to save them. Her attempt fails, but gives Mordo and Strange an escape route. The Ancient One however is revealed to be drawing power from the Dark Dimension. She is also killed during this fight. It was a bit early to kill her off, kind of leaves the mystic world unprotected. I guess there has to be something to push Strange at this point, but still it left a bad taste. Strange should have had more training.
After her death Doctor Strange was left with Mordo and Wong to fight Kaecilius and stop him from bringing the Dark Dimension and Dormomuu to earth. They would have to go of Hong Kong and protect the last Sanctum. Strange who possess the Eye of Aggomoto uses it and magic to control time and stops the destruction of the Sanctum. He also goes to the Dark Dimension to make a deal with Dormomuu. The deal gets Dormomuu to leave Earth and take Kaecilius with him. So Doctor Strange goes from saving lives to saving the universe.
This movie had a great story, a great cast, but felt like it should have been done right after Avengers instead of taking this long to release. The movie itself was great to me one of the best Marvel Movies yet, but the time felt all wrong. It could possibly be that it had to span a couple of years at least from the accident to him going to Karmar-Taj. I just feel like the character should have been introduced earlier.
The after credits scene with Mordo really sets up the sequel. Which is cool because Mordo is one of Doctor Strange's best villains. I hope to see more of his story, his character seemed limited because he was moved to more of a sidekick position for this movie.
The middle credits scene might give us an idea where Doctor Strange might show up. We see him speaking to an Avenger. I'm not going to spoil the surprise for you, but it's epic and it has to deal with a movie coming out soon from Marvel.
All in all Doctor Strange was a great movie, it's one of the more adult based films that I believe Marvel has released. As the movies go on the darker they are getting. This one had its moments with jokes and such, but no complaints from me the movie wasn't over filled with them. I hope the rest of the cinematic universe goes in this same direction.
I give Doctor Strange a 7/10. I really have nothing but good things to say, Cumberbatch was the pick for Strange. I just feel like this movie was out of place in the cinematic line up. Should have been done around the time of Iron Man 3 and Thor the Dark World. I suppose we should be happy that this movie was made and that we have been introduced to another infinity stone as well. Cannot wait for the movies that Marvel brings us next!
