Captain America Civil War
Captain America Civil War starts off with the Avengers in Nigera. The Avengers which feature Captain America, Black Widow, Falcon, and Scarlet Witch are on a mission to stop Crossbones and his group from stealing a Weapon. They are after a Biological Weapon and Captain America and the group are trying to stop him from taking it. They are successful in stopping him, but not after a mistake made by Scarlet Witch. This mistake leads the news and the people to start looking into the group and what else they have been responsible for. The Avengers who are supposed to protect the Earth, who have protected the Earth are now being questioned about being responsible for the damage and the lives lost during their heroics.
We now switch to Tony Stark, who in Tony Stark fashion is inventing the next big thing, which is a neurological enhancement to rewrite bad memories. He is of course being honored at MIT and is speaking to a class of inventors. None of this is really important, just showing that Tony Stark is still Tony Stark. The next thing that happens is however important. Tony is going to the elevator and is confronted by a woman, a woman who lets Tony know that because of him her son was dead. She lets him know that in Sokovia a building was dropped on her son and it was his fault. Well I mean he did create Ultron, and Ultron did in fact decide to use Sokovia as a weapon of mass destruction she is right. Tony of course is bothered by this and actions are taken to ensure that things like this never happen again.
This is where things start to get tricky. The movie starts to move around a lot to different countries and a lot of things are happening that aren’t going to end well for anyone. The First thing that happens is the Sokovia Accords a registration act that will help the United Nations control the enhanced Super Heroes. Which means that the Avengers would no longer be privatized protection but a government entity. The Second thing that happens is Steve Rogers, loses Peggy Carter. She passes way. Things aren’t going Steve’s way and it gets worse. Honestly the first part of this film really focuses on Steve Roger’s and the world as he knows it now falling apart around him. The only things that he has had since being unfrozen are literally leaving him standing alone.
While attending the meetings in Vienna for the Sokovia Accords which is the United Nations decision on the Registration Act there is a bombing. The bomber, is caught on camera and identified and James “Bucky” Barnes. Yes you read that right, an Assassin who is technically one of the best that ever lived, let himself get caught on camera knowingly and did not destroy it? That really didn’t set well with me. I know he’s under mind control, but still yet he’s been killing people for nearly 100 year’s I would think he could dodge a camera or two. Anyways Captain America and Falcon see this picture and decide that its time to go after Bucky. Against all warnings they decide to go after Caps friend. Again, this all relates back to Steve Rogers losing everything he cares about so he wants to make it right he wants to clear Bucky’s name no matter what the cost.
So theres fighting, and lots of fighting at that. Cap and Bucky fight a group of Swat Team Police officers taking out at least two dozen of them before jumping to the next rooftop. This is where Black Panther comes in, knowing that Bucky is the one being blamed for the bombing he wants revenge for his Father. So Cap, Bucky, and Black Panther start fighting. Bucky who clearly had nothing to do with this bombing starts running. So Cap and Black Panther give chase. I understand that Captain America and Bucky are Super Soldiers, and that Black Panther is supposed to be somewhat Superhuman, but these three men were out running vehicles on a highway. I am talking vehicles that were going 45-60 MPH. Just one thing that nags me is that these guys are fast, but they aren’t that fast. Eventually the three of them are caught and arrested because they are now criminals according to the Sokovia Accords.
So Captain America, Flacon, and Black Panther are all brought in uniforms/costumes are taken away from them and they are going to be charged for criminal acts. Tony Stark is trying to get them out of it, which it seems like he did because the only one that was ever put in a holding cell was Bucky. He was going to be psychologically evaluated. Thats not how it went down. Stark and Rogers trade a few words which end with Captain America not signing the Registration Act. The next thing we know is the psychiatrist is in the room with Bucky. He starts talking to him about his home, and he is talking about Siberia where he was kept as the Winter Soldier. He finally puts Bucky back under mind control, which leads to more fighting between Cap and Bucky. This time however it puts innocents in the way of the fight. Oh and you guessed it Helmut Zemo had something to do with all of this. He was the psychiatrist or posing as one any how.
After fighting, Captain America and Falcon are finally able to capture Bucky, and when he wakes back up he knows who Steve is and is back to his normal self. Steve gets Agent 13 to get their gear back, he calls up Clint and they are getting the Avengers together to go up against whatever they have to. So now they have Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch, Ant-Man, Flacon and Captain America, and Bucky to stand up for the Registration Act. The part with Ant-Man was excellent, it reminded me of when Agent Coulson first met Captain America and was just a fanboy. Ant-Man just couldn’t believe that he was with Captain America and the Avengers.
On the other side of things Tony Stark knew it was time to get a team together, so he had Black Widow, Vision, War Machine, Himself, Black Panther, and Spider-Man. Spider-Man or Peter Parker was amazing. Tom Holland is going to be excellent as the web slinger. Tony goes to recruit a young Peter Parker who doesn’t really want to give up his identity as Spider-Man but he does. The rest is just great. Tom Holland had one of the best performances of the film.
Back to more fighting. This time both groups have encountered each other. All Cap wants to do is clear Bucky’s name and stand up to the government. Tony wants to arrest them and take them to Ross. During the fight Ant-Man would become Giant Man which was cool, probably the best part of the fight segment at the airport. The thing I found i dislike about this fight scene, is Captain America again. He apparently has been working out, he over powered Spider-Man. Even on Caps best day he couldn’t do that. Just before this fight we seen Spider-Man catch a car. Theres just no way Cap could do that to Spider-Man. So as the fight continues we see the goal, Captain America and Bucky are trying to get to the jet because they know now exactly what happened and are going after the bad guy. They eventually get away but barely.
At the end of the fight, Captain America’s team is arrested and placed into custody, which we find out later when Tony Stark visits The Raft. He speaks with Clint and Sam Wilson(Falcon). He notices that Scarlet Witch is locked up as well. It seems as though he feels bad about what happened since he knew what exactly was going on and that they all had been tricked. Helmut Zemo had fooled them all, and now the Avengers were powerless. Iron Man would have to go after Bucky and Captain America and he knew exactly where to go. He flew off to Sibera, where the Winter Soldier was held.
The next few moments for Tony Stark would fuel his fight and hatred against Captain America. Of course Zemo landed first he had went in apparently the other Winter Soldiers that are mentioned in the film have all died so now Bucky was the only one left. Captain America and Bucky followed. Iron Man wasn’t close behind. Stark And Rogers made an agreement that they would back each other up. That is until Tony found out the truth.
When they all three got to the main room of the facility where the Winter Soldier’s were all kept the security feed replay of December 16, 1991 was playing on the monitor. Zemo had asked multiple targets throughout the film about this mission. Now we are finally going to figure it out. This movie starts out with this same incident happening. We have 1991 across the screen and are zooming into the Siberian strong hold of the Winter Soldier. He is being brain washed so that he could go assassinate someone. We would next see him on his motor cycle going after a car and shooting into the windows. The car veers off and hits a tree and he turns around climbs off the motor cycle and opens the trunk to pull out a case full of what looks to be Kree Blood. Well now we are going to find out why that scene and this date in general is so important to everyone. The people in the car that are killed Turn out to be Howard Stark and his wife. The mother and father of Tony Stark/Iron Man. What we didn’t see in the first clip was the Winter Soldier killing them both. After the wreck Bucky goes up to the drivers side and pulls Howard out of the car and kills him, after killing him he goes to the passenger side of the car and murders his wife. Tony stood and watched this on the video clip.
Tony turned to Cap, he demanded to know if Steve knew that this had happened. Rogers admitted that he did know. This sent Tony into a rage that we have never seen before. He would start fighting both Bucky and Captain America. Bucky ran off and Cap was trying to protect him and go after him. At one point again Super Captain America grabbed Iron Man’s leg and held him in place while he was trying to fly. Those are jets in his boots, I mean the helicopter thing was pretty neat, but jet propulsion boots thats just not going to happen he would have went flying with Iron Man. Cap damaged the booster in the boot. Which limited the flying ability of Iron Man, but he was still able to hold his own. At first it didn’t look good for him, but he beat Bucky down. Bucky caught a uni-beam to his robotic arm which disintegrated it. Which that took Bucky out of the fight.
This left only Captain America and Iron Man the two men that really started this whole mess. Cap because apparently being patriotic and working for the government and being apart of it as a Captain in the United States military means that you can’t trust the government and work for them now? Makes a lot of sense when you think about it. I mean he defended the country in World War 2 was frozen and unthawed nearly 80 years later and he decides that he just doesn’t want to be affiliated with government rule. That just doesn’t sound like a soldier. Tony Stark was always about control in the MCU that is why he became Iron Man. He was going to be a deterrent to help save the world. He’s always been with the government though with Stark Industries selling weapons and what not.
This final fight scene was great. Iron Man done a scan of Cap and was able to start mimicking his moves and fighting style and beat Cap down. Cap would eventually win if you can call it that. He again caught Tony while he was using the jet boosters in his boots and slammed him to the ground. Cap then took the shield and drove it into the chest piece of the Iron Man armor destroying the Arch reactor power source. Captain America and Bucky walk away from this fight, while Iron Man returns empty handed.
I thought his movie was amazing, I believe it is the greatest film the MCU has put out since the original Avengers movie. I mean It should go 1.Avengers 2. Captain America Civil War 3. Captain America Winter Soldier. However there are a lot of things that kind of just get at me when watching the film. For example Captain America seems to be over powered, that could be me nitpicking but I mean holding Iron Man still while he’s trying to fly, or over powering Spider-Man he just isn’t strong enough to do that. On Caps best day he is strong, extremely fast and athletic and is an amazing hand to hand combatant, but he is not superhuman.
Spider-Man just brought a lot to this film, I am so glad that they MCU made a deal to get him there and have him involved. I cannot wait for his standalone movie!
As always the rest of the Avengers really round out the movie here. They really gave Iron Man and Cap a great supporting cast of characters to work with. They each had something to do with this, such as Black Panthers tie to his fathers death, Black Widow who cares for both of them was really trying to get Cap to see everything in perspective. We also have Scarlett Witch who feels like she’s an outcast because she caused the incident in Nigeria. Vision was comforting her. Falcon who stood by Cap no matter what. Clint and Ant-Man really were just there because they are Avengers, same as War Machine he was there for Tony. War Machine I almost forgot was paralyzed during the airport fight, Tony had already put together some tech to help him walk again.
The movie had a lot of great fight scenes, and a lot of moments that you just felt bad for everyone. All at the same time you really could see the world through Caps eyes and how everything for him was really falling apart, but you could also see how everyone was trying to get him to see that if he would just accept change that everything would be okay. He was fighting the fight for what he believed was everything he had to hold onto. No one really stopped the entire film to realize that he had lost Peggy, and if the government had gotten to Bucky he would have lost his best friend. He was losing the Avengers which was really the only group of people he had been with since he was thawed. His life was falling apart and he couldn’t even depend on the only people he has known to help him through it they just kept trying to get him to sign the Registration Act. Honestly in the end it was all for nothing, Bucky wanted to be frozen again, and Cap decided he was going to continue doing what he does best and that was saving people.
This is what a movie looks like when the story is thought through and adapted to the big screen. I really can’t say enough about that, the story for this movie was great. I know we were all over the place in so many different countries, but it was all important to the story line. The cast of actors couldn’t have been chosen better. Which I know most of them are returns, but still we have to give it to the actors. I can’t wait to see what the Russo brothers have planned for the Avengers next!
This movie deserves a solid 8/10… The only things that are keeping it from a perfect score is the way Captain America was over powered and the final fight. I felt that it could have been better, that Iron Man should have walked away from it instead of Cap. Other than those two things this movie deserves every dime it will make and all of the positive reviews!
